In 1838, the German Settlement Society of Philadelphia helped a group of immigrants establish townships along the Missouri River in an area. It came to be known as the Missouri Rhineland due to its similarity to that Central European region. This area had a rich yet rocky soil and steep, rolling hills that were very familiar to these immigrants.As they build their modest, sturdy and sparsely decorated homes, they began growing vegetables native to their homeland, like greens, turnips and cabbage. More importantly, they began cultivating vineyards in the same manner that they did in their homelands.To this day, the Missouri Rhineland is a place were generous hosts welcome visitors from St. Louis, Kansas City and many other areas to enjoy their rustic wineries and stunning scenery.
